Irish Sayings and Blessings

New York (GaeaTimes.com) – The Irish are known for their witty yet wise proverbs and sayings. Though in the St. Patrick’s day more beer is consumed than any other holiday, the wisdom and humor of the Irish people does not fall short. The sayings make us smile but still they have wisdom seeded within them. Though some people say that some proverbs are based on some biblical proverbs, some of the proverbs are very light and enjoyable.
Here are some Irish Sayings and Blessings.

Irish Sayings

  1. An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold onto one blade of grass to keep from falling off the earth.
  2. In Heaven there is no beer that’s why we drink it here!
  3. Irish diplomacy is the ability to tell a man to go to hell so that he looks forward to making the trip.
  4. You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your father was.
  5. It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money!
  6. There are only two kinds of people in the world, The Irish and those who wish they were.
  7. Drink is the curse of the land. It makes you fight with your neighbor. It makes you shoot at your landlord-and it makes you miss him.
  8. There’s nothing so bad it couldn’t be worse.
  9. However long the day, night must fall.
  10. You must take the little potato with the big potato.
  11. God prefers prayers to tears….
  12. It is the quiet pig that eats the meal.
  13. A person who loves sleep will find poverty sooner than his wakeful friend.
  14. Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.
  15. If you’re enough lucky to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!
  16. Many an opportunity is lost because a man is out looking for four-leaf clovers.
  17. Never iron a four-leaf clover, because you don’t want to press your luck.
  18. An Irishman has an abiding sense of tragedy which sustains him through temporary periods of joy.
  19. Here’s to you and yours and to mine and ours. And if mine and ours ever come across to you and yours, I hope you and yours will do as much for mine and ours as mine and ours have done for you and yours!
  20. You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.
  21. A best friend is like a four leaf clover: hard to find and lucky to have.
  22. You won’t learn to swim on the kitchen floor.
  23. There are fish in the sea better than have ever been caught.
  24. The Irish forgive their great men when they are safely buried.
  25. Whoever gossips with you will gossip of you.
